Appleton win League Championship

By Martin Saxon

Title returns to Warrington after day of abandoned matches

Division One – August 23:

Chester Boughton Hall 37-4 (27; Poppy Beardsell 2-9) (10pts)
Appleton dnb (10pts)

• None of today’s matches saw the first innings completed as rain swept across Cheshire. The points gained here were however sufficient to see Appleton to their fourth league title. Appleton’s bowling attack has been excellent all season and this superb bowling performance was a fitting way to clinch the crown, in spite of the final result. Sami Fowler led the way in the field, conceding only one run in five overs. The abandonment leaves 2013 champions Chester almost certainly needing to win against Trafford MV on the final day to avoid the wooden spoon, and relegation to division two under the current format. If Trafford lose, they will need five more points than Astley Bridge obtain on the last day to stay up

Trafford MV 66-3 (31; Carol Ingham 23*, Claire Waterhouse 2-21) (11pts)
Oakmere dnb (10pts)

• Oakmere restricted Trafford to little more than two per over, but their hopes of retaining the title disappeared when the match was abandoned

Division Two – August 23:

Stockport Trinity 130-5 (31.4; Jennie Kitzinger 45*, Laura Newton 3-22) (14pts)
Wistaston Village dnb (11pts)

• Rain also had the last word here with Trinity progressing well. Wistaston remain in second place but Trinity could still overhaul them, with Wistaston facing a trip to division champions Didsbury on the final day

Hawarden Park 72 (35; Laura Wilson 20, Ellie Grisedale 5-20, Elisha Price 3-12) (10pts)
Oxton dnb (13pts)

• The weather deprived Oxton of a great opportunity to record their first win of the season. Ellie Grisedale was again in great form with the ball
